How Does Active Science Work?


1. STEM Experiences

Children interact with a variety of technologies such as activity monitors, tablets, and a novel mobile app to make learning accessible, relevant, and fun. At Active Science, we want children to get excited about science through experiential learning.

2. Physical Activity Achievement

The integration of physical activity, games, and learning creates a novel strategy to address key health and educational priorities by decreasing time children spend sedentary and closing the academic achievement gap.

3. Concrete Data

By tracking both the physical activity children do and their STEM achievements, our novel mobile app is able to generate weekly and monthly reports allowing your organization to quantify the impact Active Science has on your children.

With over 25 years experience as a YMCA CEO and leader in many key strategic initiatives, Steve is widely recognized for his contributions to the YMCA Movement. Steve oversees business development and scaling of Active Science within the YMCA network.View Bio
Kevin Finn, EdD, ATC, CSCS

Associate Dean, School of Health Sciences at Merrimack College and Active Science Educational Director

Dr. Finn teaches a variety of courses in Health Sciences at the College and oversees educational content of Active Science. His specialized training from the School of Education at Boston University involved curriculum development for school and after school physical activity programs.View Bio
Frank Kenneally, MS

Chief Operating Officer of the Merrimack Valley YMCA and Partner in Active Science

Among his many roles, Frank serves as the leader of all youth services, child care, camping services, and educational programs at each branch of the Merrimack Valley YMCA. He is directly responsible for overseeing and ensuring quality control of Active Science implementation at all partner YMCAs.View Bio
Zi Yan, PhD, MPH

Assistant Professor, School of Health Sciences at Merrimack College and Active Science Research Director

Dr. Yan's educational training includes public health, sport and exercise psychology, and quantitative analysis. She teaches several courses in public health at the College, and oversees the data management systems of Active Science.View Bio
Lindsey Carbone, MS

Graduate Program Director, School of Health Sciences at Merrimack College and Communications Consultant for Active Science

Lindsey has a Bachelors degree in exercise science and a Masters of Management and serves as the Graduate Program Director for the School of Health Sciences at Merrimack College. As the Communications Consultant for Active Science, Lindsey ensures effective communications with all stakeholders in the program.View Bio
Breanne Dowdie, MS

Active Education Coordinator, Merrimack Valley YMCA

Breanne worked with Active Science from 2012-2014 while attending Merrimack College for her Bachelors in Sports Medicine, and rejoined the team in 2016 after graduating from UMass Boston with her Masters degree in Exercise Physiology. While located in the northeast, Breanne works will all Active Science sites nationally.View Bio
Lindsey Cook

Active Science School Coordinator, Merrimack Valley YMCA

Lindsey has a Bachelors degree in biology and is working towards a Masters degree in Education Studies in Secondary Education from Rivier University. Lindsey’s primary role in Active Science will focus on the implementation of Active Science in five public schools in Lawrence, MA; an initiative made possible by a grant from the New Balance Foundation.View Bio
